Rating Process
At SkyComm, transparency and fairness are central to our assessment procedures. Our rating process follows the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to ensure accurate and consistent evaluation of your language proficiency. This page outlines how our certified language assessors conduct assessments, apply ICAO rating scales, and provide structured feedback. Whether you're preparing for your initial test or aiming to improve your rating, understanding the process will help you approach it with clarity and confidence.

Reliability and Objectivity
Dual Independent Rating
Each candidate’s performance is assessed by two independent raters who evaluate responses separately. The raters do not communicate with each other, ensuring that each rating is unbiased and based solely on the candidate’s responses.

Objective Rating
To maintain fairness, candidates’ names and personal details are anonymized during the assessment process. Raters only see the performance data, which removes any potential bias and keeps the focus entirely on language proficiency.
ICAO Proficiency Criteria
Raters evaluate candidates based on the ICAO Language Proficiency Rating Scale, which includes six key criteria: Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency, Comprehension, and Interaction. Each criterion is rated from Level 1 to Level 6, with Level 4 being the minimum requirement for professional aviation operations.

3rd Rater in Case of Discrepancy
In the rare event of a significant discrepancy between the two raters (for instance, if one rater passes the candidate while the other does not), a third independent rater is called in. This third rating determines the final outcome, ensuring that candidates receive an accurate and fair assessment.

Validity Period
Candidates who achieve Level 4 proficiency have their certification valid for three years under ICAO regulations (four years for EASA). Level 5 proficiency is valid for six years, and Level 6 proficiency is awarded lifetime validity, reflecting the candidate's high level of language proficiency.
Consistency & Quality
Our raters are highly qualified professionals with advanced degrees and specific experience in aviation communication and language assessment. Regular training and calibration sessions are conducted to maintain consistency and uphold the quality of the rating process.
