SkyComm Test of Aviation English is designed to assess pilots' ability to communicate effectively in both routine and emergency aviation scenarios, following ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements.

Test Structure

This structured mock assessment ensures a thorough evaluation of your aviation English proficiency in realistic contexts. Each task is specifically crafted to reflect real-world situations, providing an authentic testing experience to help you succeed in your aviation career.

  • Task 1 - General Questions

    In this first task, the candidates are addressed three personal and aviation-related questions.

    1) What is the best part of becoming a pilot?

    2) What do you do for being a healthy pilot?

    3) What does near miss mean?

  • Task 2 - Listening Comprehension

    In this second task, the candidates are addressed four authentic recordings, including ATIS and operational problems. They are expected to comprehend the intended messages within the authentic recordings and respond to each question related to the recordings.

  • Task 3 - Receiving clearance

    In this third task, the candidates engage in a simulated communication scenario involving an air traffic control officer (ATCO). The candidates are expected to manage the communication with the ATCO by requesting a clerance based on the given scenario and responding to the instructions given by the ATCO.

  • Task 4 - Position Reporting

    In this fourth task, the candidates are presented an authentic flight scenario, in which they are expected to determine their position based on the information in the given map and primary flight display. Then, they are requested to transmit a radio message to the ATCO by using standard phraseology.

    I -   distance to the airfield

    II -  altitude

    III - heading

  • Task 5 - Readback

    In this fifth task, the candidates listen to an authentic aviation scenario, involving an ATCO giving instructions  to the candidate. The candidates are expected to comprehend the transmitted instruction, process it, and read back correctly.

    Sample Scenario:

    You are the pilot of SKY26 at LTFM, and you have just requested your route clearance for Athens (LGAV). Listen to the instructions of the ATCO and read it back correctly.

  • Task 6 - Emergency Scenarios

    In this sixth task, the candidates are presented an authentic aviation scenario involving various emergencies that occur during flight operations. They are expected to respond to the given emergency situation and manage the communication both with the ATCO and the crew members by using plain language as well as standard phraseology.

    Sample Scenario:

    You will listen to a recording that presents detailed information about an emergency situation. In the first part of this task, you are expected to declare an emergency to the ATCO based on the given scenario.

    In the third part of this task, make an announcement to passengers and inform them about the current emergency situation by using plain language.

  • Task 7 -Picture Description

    In this seventh task, the candaidates are presented a photo related to aviation operations. They are expected to review the photo for 30 seconds and describe it, focusing on details such as the aircraft, environment, and any actions observed.

  • Task 8 - Video-based analysis

    In this last task, the candidates watch a short and authentic aviation-related video, involving but not limited to aviation incidents. Then, they are addressed three questions associated with the video. They are expected to analyze the chain of events and communication to respond to the questions effectively by using plain language.

    Sample Question:

    Before you watch the video below, read the following three questions that you will be addressed after watching the video.

     

    1) What is the overall flight route of the aircraft on the day of the incident?

    2) What is the sequence of events in the video?

    3) What can be argued about the landing performance of the pilots in the video given the circumstances of the emergency situation?
